Children entering third grade are just getting started with the formal business of learning to read. There is a great difference between what they can read independently and what they can listen to, understand and enjoy. At this age many parents believe that because children can now read for themselves, there is no longer any need for reading to their children. Every day at school we read to our classes and encourage parents to do the same at home.
While there are many distractions for children in this age group and activities which interfere with regular independent reading, we hope that parents and children will continue to read together, developing lasting relationships and interests through books- a life-skill which lasts forever and leads to success in every aspect of the school curriculum. Children should be encouraged to participate in the selection of the books that they will read both independently and with their parents. in this way reading becomes an activity that is "desired" rather than "required".
Listed below are some of the books and authors that we recommend for your summer reading enjoyment
