Library Policies and Procedures

Class Time
Students at SMA are encouraged to use the library independently as well as during their assigned library time. All students in grade kindergarten through sixth grade have scheduled weekly classes. Students in grades seven and eight divide up their year with one semester in library, one semester in computer lab. The class is split in half, one group goes to library while the other half goes to computer, they switch half way through the year. Students can come to the library with permission from their teacher at anytime during the school day to research or take out books.

Borrowing Procedure
All students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are allowed to borrow from the library. They borrow for a one-week period. If they finish the book before the due date they can bring the book back and borrow a new one, they do not have to wait for the next scheduled class. If they have been reading the book and want to renew it they may renew for another one-week period. Most books can be renewed for up to one month. There are a select few books that may not be renewed depending on demand from other students. Books should be present at time of renewal to be given a new due date.

Number of Books Students Can Borrow
Kindergarten One
First through Fourth Grade One
Fifth-Eighth Two (on occasion a student may need more)

Selection
Students are encouraged to take out a book that is age appropriate. Books are labeled by suggested age levels to help guide the student. If they do not like the book they have chosen they can bring it back at any time. Young adult books are in a separate section to help keep younger students from reading more mature subject matter.

Overdue Policy
There is a one-day grace period and then a fine of 5 cents is charged to the student. A late notice goes out to the student after one week. The students are not allowed to borrow a new book until they have returned their book.

Lost and Damaged Books
Minor tears and marks are expected with regular circulation. Books that are returned damaged beyond regular use will need to be replaced. Student will be given a notice with the replacement cost. They will not be allowed to borrow another book until the replacement cost is paid. This goes for lost books also. Habitual offenders will not be allowed to borrow a book from the library.
